Written to be performed at the High Score Music Festival in Pavia, Italy in July, 2013. In this piece I tried to escape from Steve Reich’s influence by just giving in to it. I’ve been deeply in the shadow of his piece, “New York Counterpoint,” for clarinet and tape or clarinet ensemble. Just as a piece of music it’s like nothing I had ever heard before, and also it changed the way I see the clarinet. Before that piece, my image of the clarinet was the Romantic model- beautiful but somehow representative of another era. Of course I had heard a lot of jazz clarinet as well, which I also love, but Reich’s piece hit me in a way I’ve never been before. So, this piece is a kind of exorcism of “New York Counterpoint’s” wonderful hold on me.
